Christmas Island – Cocos Keeling Islands – Indian Ocean

Christmas and Cocos Keeling Islands are two of Australia’s most remote and spectacular territories.

Lying 360km south of Jakarta, Christmas Island is a rugged sea mount famous for its annual migration of Red Crabs. Crowned by jungle, it is also home to many species of birds and plant life found nowhere else on earth.

A further 900km west is the necklace of coral islands that forms Cocos Keeling Islands. It was here that Charles Darwin developed his theory of atoll formation on board the Beagle. With a maximum height of 10m above sea level, Cocos Keeling is home to pristine coral islands, gin clear tropical waters and a colourful indigenous Malay community.

Walking gentle grade paths, you will have many opportunities to capture some of the world’s most unique wildlife in photographs.

Skills learned: Techniques include macro, landscape and wildlife photography. You will learn more about shutter speeds, working with circular polarizing filters and different timed exposures in Australia’s most spectacular tropical island paradises.

Cambodia

One of South East Asia’s most stunning countries, Cambodia has a spectacular yet gruesome history. It is the home to the gargantuan ruins of Angkor, the largest inland lake in Asia and also some of the friendliest people in the region.

In 2013 I will be leading a small group into Cambodia to visit the temples of Angkor, one of the floating villages on Tonle Sap lake and tour the intoxicatingly beautiful countryside around Siem Reap.

You will have an opportunity to meet wonderful Cambodian people and experience the way they live.

While we are exploring I will be on hand to guide you in the use of your camera and other tips on how you can get the best shots of landscapes, ruins and the people you will meet.

I have also timed the trip to occur at the same time as the Lotus Lily harvest in Cambodia.
